October 16, 1992 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE
Other office-seekers' positions of record
Since the level of participation in their survey was so low, Stonewall Cleveland has provided a summary of the positions of non-responding candidates who are current office-holders. This information was derived from letters written to Stonewall members as well as meetings with the candidates.
John Glenn, incumbent U.S. Senator (D)
Senator Glenn has expressed support for Roe v. Wade, opposition to the "gag rule," on abortion in federally-funded clinics, and has stressed his cosponsorship of the Freedom of Choice Act. He has supported the military's ban on lesbian and gay service in the military. He has said that he opposes discrimination against lesbians and gays in general, and supported the Hate Crime Statistics Act, but he has also said that he does not support the federal lesbian and gay civil rights act.
Louis Stokes, U.S. Representative, 11th District (D)
Representative Stokes is a cosponsor of the federal lesbian and gay civil rights act. At the town hall meeting he and Rep. Mary Rose Oakar held this spring on health care issues, he said that he considered his cosponsorship of the bill a matter of civil rights; that he had received support from lesbian and gay organizations; and that he welcomed the support of lesbian and gay organizations.
Mary Rose Oakar, U.S. Representative, 10th District (D)
Representative Oakar did not initially cosponsor the federal lesbian and gay civil rights act this term, even though she had cosponsored it in the past. StonewallCleveland worked for a year trying to obtain her cosponsorship of the act. She did become a cosponsor shortly after being publicly challenged on the issue at the Town Hall meeting by a member of Queer Nation Cleveland.

Her position on a woman's right to choose abortion is unclear; Stonewall has some evidence that the positions she supports in letters may not accurately reflect her actual vote on a measure. She is a long-time supporter of increased Federal funding for breast cancer research. She caused concern among gay men last year when she was quoted in the Plain Dealer as criticizing the National Institutes of Health by saying, "It's the same old good ol' boys' sexist bull. They can spend over a billion dollars on AIDS research, but when we get a piddling amount like $50 million, these guys in the administration gang up on us." (Plain Dealer, 7-26-91 p. 1A) However, at the Town Hall meeting she explained that she believed that medical programs could be expanded without cutting medical programs already in existence.
Madeline A. Cain, State Representative, 17th District (D)
State Rep. Cain has been quoted in the Plain Dealer as supporting increased funding for AIDS, and she addressed the marchers at the Memorial Day AIDS march this year. Last year when park rangers at Lakefront State Park appeared to be overreacting to cruising in the park, she involved herself in a positive manner.
Eric Fingerhut, currently State Senator,
candidate for U.S. Representative, 19th District (D)
State Sen. Fingerhut has continually shown an interest in working with the lesbian and gay community, and has attended Pride Day events and the 1991 Stonewall political reception, and has the support of many lesbians and gays in his potential district.
Gary C. Suhadolnik, State Senator, 24th District (R)
State Sen. Suhadolnik is generally not believed to support gay and lesbian concerns.
Endorsements in the November elections
probably do some volunteer work too. She has a hard fight but will be a wonderful addition to the state legislature.
There is really not much to say about her opponent Grace Drake except that one of her best buddies is our own Gary Suhadolnik. Enough said!
Ohio Senate, 24th District
Mary Dunning (D)
Gary Suhadolnik (R) Vaughn D. Stakes
We figured that almost anyone would be a welcome change from Suhadolnik. Remember, this is the man that during an interview with the Chronicle asked the publisher what lesbians did in bed.
But we lucked out; not only did we get anyone, we got two candidates who would be easy to vote for.
During an interview with Mary Dunning's campaign manager, her positive position on gay rights was made clear. Stakes also answered the Stonewall survey in a positive manner, but we feel that Dunning is a more viable candidate, so we are endorsing her.
It will be a pleasure to vote for Mary Dunning as well as against Gary Suhadolnik.
Ohio House, 8th District
★C.J. Prentiss (D)
Lelia S. King (R)
C.J. Prentiss has been a longtime friend to our community. She shows up at our events and protects our rights in the State House. Let her continue to do a great job.

Ohio House, 9th District ★Barbara Boyd (D) Charles A. Byrne
Those of us who live in Cleveland Heights cannot help but know who Barbara Boyd is. She is a relentless champion of civil rights for all and for women's issues. She is the only respondent to the Stonewall questionnaire who would not make intentional transmission of HIV a felony, which leads us to believe she understands that this would be just another way to persecute gay people. We think she will make an excellent representative and would like you to help her achieve that goal.
Ohio House, 10th District Troy Lee James (D) Norbert Carson (R)
No endorsement in this race. James did return the Stonewall survey, but some of his answers may be suspect. For instance, he says he is for a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, but sources say he has never voted pro-choice in his career. We aren't going to endorse him.
Ohio House, 11th District Jane Campbell (D) Ed Anderson (R)
It would be hard not to endorse Jane Campbell. She is also a relentless fighter for civil rights for all. Campbell is fair and a well informed legislator.

Ohio House, 12th District Vermel M. Whalen (D) Samuel D. Garland (R)
No endorsement in this race. We just wanted to mention it because of its abundance of homophobic candidates.
Whalen is a born-again who would impose her religious beliefs on all of us. Garland gets the Chronicle's "Biggest Balls of the Year Award" for returning the Stonewall questionnaire with all negative answers. Usually, if a candidate is against a certain group of constituents, the candidate ignores them. He doesn't send back a hate letter.
Ohio House, 13th District ★Barbara Pringle (D) Frank Johanek (R) Rick Nagin
We had the pleasure of being able to interview Barbara Pringle about her positions this election year. The interview is on page 19, and it will explain clearly why we have endorsed her.
Ohio House, 17th District Madeline A. Cain (D) George Popovich (R)
As a dear friend to this community, Madeline Cain has represented Lakewood and its surrounding areas as a champion of lesbians and gay men. She worked for nursing homes to accept HIV-positive pa-
tients and helped when the Edgewater and Metroparks rangers were harassing gay men. When asked, Cain will respond to our needs. Let's keep her in office. We don't have a better friend in Columbus.
Ohio House, 20th District Ronald Mottl (D) ★Gary Barna (R)
This is it, our first Republican! Gary Barna will be a refreshing change over Ronald Mottl, and we are excited to get a chance to support a more progressive candidate in this district.
There are some reservations to Barna though. His position on abortion still has government making decisions best left to women, and he is for mandatory HIV testing of health care workers. We hope to educate Barna on these issues when he joins his fellow representatives in Columbus. For now, good luck, Gary, go get 'em.
Cuyahoga County Commissioner Mary Boyle (D) Virgil Brown, Jr. (R)
Mary Boyle was originally scheduled as the featured speaker at Pride '92 this year but couldn't make it because of a very sick friend. But her support of this community has been continuous. Her understanding of our community goes beyond the average politician's. Keep Boyle in office, it will be good for all of us.
